When I last visited Guyana, it was during the country's vibrant celebration of its 50th Independence anniversary. While Guyana officially became a republic on February 23, 1970, honoring the anniversary of the historic Cuffy slave rebellion, this trip allowed me to truly experience the heart and soul of the nation for the first time.
In the past, my visits were mainly centered around family gatherings, but this time was different. I traveled with family from Toronto, and together, we embraced the new and emerging tourism opportunities designed for those who wished to see a different side of Guyana.
We ventured to places I never imagined stepping foot in, and I left feeling both exhilarated and renewed. Our stay at the newly opened Marriott was the perfect blend of comfort and luxury. We spent our days exploring, from exhilarating boat rides across the Demerara River to Berbice, to soaring in a small plane over the majestic Amazon Rainforest to witness the breathtaking wonder of Kaieteur Falls, an experience I'll never forget.
This trip revealed Guyana in a whole new light, offering me not just memories but a deeper connection to its natural beauty and rich heritage.

Here are four great reasons to visit Guyana:
- Pristine Nature and Wildlife
Guyana is a paradise for nature lovers. With over 80% of its land covered by rainforests, it boasts rich biodiversity. The country is home to exotic wildlife like jaguars, giant river otters, and a wide variety of bird species. Kaieteur Falls, one of the world's tallest single-drop waterfalls, is a must-see and surrounded by untouched wilderness. Adventure and Ecotourism
Guyana is a top destination for eco-adventures. You can explore jungle treks, wildlife safaris, and river excursions. Whether it's hiking through the rainforest, birdwatching, or paddling through remote rivers, the outdoor opportunities are endless for adventure enthusiasts.
3. Cultural Diversity
The country is a melting pot of cultures, with influences from Indigenous, African, Indian, European, and Chinese communities. This mix is reflected in the festivals, food, music, and traditions. Visitors can experience a unique blend of flavors and traditions, particularly in Georgetown, the capital.

4. Authentic Off-the-Beaten-Path Experience
Unlike more tourist-heavy destinations, Guyana offers a more authentic and less commercialized travel experience. The country's natural beauty and cultural experiences feel untouched by mass tourism, allowing travelers to enjoy a more intimate and genuine connection with the local environment and people.

One of my other favorite places that I visited while on this trip was Splashmins Fun Park and Resort (often just called Splashmins). It is one of Guyana’s most popular recreational destinations. Located about 45 minutes from Georgetown, near Linden-Soesdyke Highway, it offers a family-friendly mix of nature, fun, and relaxation.
Key Highlights:
- Man-Made Lake: At the heart of Splashmins is a large man-made blackwater lake with white sandy beaches—ideal for swimming and lounging.
- Water Activities: Visitors can enjoy paddle boats, slides, and other water-based attractions.
- Accommodations: On-site lodging includes rustic cabins and guesthouses for overnight stays.
- Event Space: The resort is a hotspot for weddings, corporate retreats, and large public events like concerts and festivals.
- Natural Surroundings: Surrounded by lush greenery and tropical flora, it's a relaxing escape into nature while still being accessible from the city.
Splashmins offers a mix of eco-tourism and family fun, making it a go-to weekend getaway for locals and tourists alike.
